Information

Percutaneous Vertebroplasty (PVP) is a new interventional radiology technique for image-guided treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures. Currently, it is mainly used for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture and primary or metastatic invasive tumor of the vertebral body, which has obvious effects on reducing pain, increasing vertebral strength and improving systemic symptoms.
China has tended to the aging of the population, according to statistics, China's population over the age of 65 has accounted for 7.1 percent of the total population, reaching 90 million. Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases in the elderly, and osteoporosis tends to cause associated vertebral fractures. A fracture of the vertebral body can lead to dysfunctional pain that lasts for months. The pain can cause loss of labor and movement, and in nearly 40 percent of patients there is no improvement. It can quickly lead to fatal complications such as limb loss, atonia and pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Most patients do not accept or can not tolerate surgical treatment, and the use of a large number of drug therapy, and often cause drug toxicity and drug dependence.
Percutaneous vertebral plasty is developed in Europe and the United States in recent years, a new minimally invasive spine surgery, under the guidance of X-ray perspective, from the back through pedicle to insert a thin needle, vertebral body in the vertebral body damage or loose into one called polymethyl methacrylate (Polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA) bone cement, it has at the same time to achieve pain relief and reconstruction of bone biomechanical strength. The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 to 40 minutes per session, even for frail patients. After treatment, the rate of pain relief and functional recovery was 95 percent, and the safety of the surgery was good, with only 1.5 percent of complications. Vertebroplasty has a rapid and long-lasting therapeutic effect, with obvious effects of pain control and vertebral strengthening. Its excellent curative effect is uncomparable to that of traditional treatment methods (such as bed rest, traction, anti-inflammatory treatment, or the use of narcotic painkillers).
Our department has carried out percutaneous verteoplasty for nearly a year, and treated nearly 100 patients. Remarkable results have been achieved in relieving patients' pain and functional recovery, especially for senile patients and those with internal diseases.

[Applicable Certificate]
1. Compression fracture of the vertebral body caused by osteoporosis: the patient has moderate-severe pain and/or activity disorder \ pain duration <12 months and the affected vertebral body collapse is moderate-moderate.
2. Vertebral tumors, such as hemangioma of vertebral body, osteolytic metastasis tumor, myeloma, etc.
[Taboo]
1. Absolute contraindications: patients with coagulation dysfunction, vertebral osteomyelitis, etc.
2. Relative contraindications: pain duration >12 months; Vertebral body collapse >90%; Compression of >20% of spinal canal or compression of nerve roots.
"Merit"
1. Minimally invasive surgery was performed under local anesthesia, with no obvious contraindications for patients with poor physical condition and old age;
2. The treatment of a vertebral body can be completed in about 5 minutes after the successful puncture of a needle in a short operation time;
3. Quick recovery and short hospital stay generally get up and move on the second day after surgery.
